Daniel Harold Burke, 73, of Louisa, passed away Friday, December 16, 2016 at King’s Daughter’s Medical Center.
Dan / Danny, as he was known to family and friends, was born November 9, 1943 in Columbus, Mississippi. He spent his early childhood in Ridgewood, Queens in New York before moving out to Hicksville, New York on Long Island.
An avid young tennis player, Dan attended Morehead State University on a tennis scholarship. He met his wife, Linda at MSU. Upon graduating from MSU in 1965 with a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Dan and Linda moved to Maryland, where they both began their careers as Physical Education teachers. After serving four years in the United States Air Force, Dan went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Education. Soon after moving back to Kentucky in 1977, Dan began work at the AEP Kentucky Power Big Sandy Plant, from which he retired in 2006.
Dan continued playing tennis upon moving back to Kentucky and was the LCHS tennis coach in the early 1990s. He also enjoyed playing golf with his co-workers and friends and was an active volunteer at the Yatesville Lake State Park Golf Course.
Dan was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Linda Rae Ferguson Burke, as well as his parents, Harold and June Burke of North Port, Florida.
He is survived by two daughters, Cari Elizabeth Bradley (Thomas) of Georgetown; Susan Rebecca Little (Steve) of Louisa; one sister, June Cardenas of Bohemia, New York, and his four favorite people who called him ‘Grandpa’…Michael Burke Hogan, Charles Ferguson Bradley, Matthew Blake Hogan, and Lily Elizabeth Bradley.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to God’s Pantry Food Bank, where Dan was a volunteer. Donations may be sent to First Baptist Church, 301 West Pike Street, Louisa, attention Bob Chapman.
