THERE HAVE BEEN 5 ARRESTS IN JOHNSON COUNTY SINCE THE BEGINNING OF APRIL 1; OUT OF THE TOTAL OF 25 PRISONERS FROM JOHNSON, LAWRENCE, MAGOFFIN, AND MARTIN COUNTIES (COMBINED) BOOKED AT THE BIG SANDY REGIONAL DETENTION CENTER IN PAINTSVILLE. FOR A COMPARISON; FROM MARCH 1-15, 2020, THERE WERE 178 PRISONERS BOOKED AT THE BSRDC. AND FROM MARCH 16-31, THERE WERE 59 PRISONERS BOOKED AT THE BSRDC.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff Doug Saylor, on the afternoon of April 8, 2020 , The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office acted upon tips received from concerned citizens. Deputies executed a search warrant at a residence in the Hager Hill area where deputies located and confiscated in excess of 1/2 pound of methamphetamine, approximately $12,000.00 in cash, a firearm, and drug paraphernalia. Deputies were assisted by Operation UNITE officers.

Any and all drug tips can be forwarded to Operation UNITE or the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. All tips can remain confidential. This case is still under investigation by both agencies.

Gregory Jones, 42, of Sitka, Kentucky; was arrested on April 2,2020, at 1:54 P.M., by an officer of the Paintsville Police Department, and was charged with:
• ASSAULT,4TH DEGREE (DOMESTIC VIOLENCE) MINOR INJURY.
Shawn R. Gayheart, 31, of Liberty, Kentucky; was arrested on April 6, 2020, at 7:58 P.M., by deputy Jeffrey R. Castle, of the Johnson County Sheriff Department, and was charged with:
• THEFT BY UNLAWFUL TAKING OR DISPOSITION AUTO – $500 OR MORE BUT UNDER/$10,000,
• OPERATING MOTOR VEHICLE UNDER/INFLUENCE ALCOHOL/DRUGS/ETC. .08 (AGGRAVATING CIRCUMSTANCES) 4TH OR >,
• DRIVING DUI SUSPENDED LICENSE – 2ND OFFENSE (AGGRAVATING CIRCUMSTANCES), • FLEEING OR EVADING POLICE, 2ND DEGREE (ON FOOT),
• RESISTING ARREST,
• ASSAULT 3RD DEGREE-POLICE OFFICER OR PROB OFFICER,
• DISORDERLY CONDUCT, 2ND DEGREE,
• DRUG PARAPHERNALIA – BUY/POSSESS.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff Doug Saylor, on Monday April 6 at approximately 5:40 pm Paintsville/Johnson County 911 received a call from Storm Creek Trailer Park in Staffordsville. The caller reported that a male subject had just stolen his vehicle, described as a red 1997 Dodge Dakota pickup. The caller stated the subject left the area traveling in the direction of Paintsville on Rt. 40. Deputies immediately started observing for the vehicle.
At approximately 6:15 pm the vehicle was located at BP on US 23 at Turner Branch Hill. Deputies encountered a male subject identified as Shawn Gayheart, 31 years old of Williamsport, KY.
When approached by deputies, Mr. Gayheart attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly stopped at which time he began fighting with the deputies. During the altercation, several deputies were assaulted before he was subdued and taken into custody. Upon searching Mr. Gayheart, he was found to be in possession of of a hypodermic syringe. Mr. Gayheart stated he had been injecting crack cocaine all day.
Responding to the call were Deputies Bryan Childers, Jeff Castle, Jason Arms, and Michael Scott. Mr. Gayheart was arrested by Deputy Castle and transported to Big Sandy Regional Detention Center after medical clearance at Paul B Hall Medical Center.
Shawn Easley, 29, of Sitka, Kentucky; was arrested on April 8, 2020, at 10:47 P.M., by deputy Jason Arms, of the Johnson County Sheriff Department, & was charged with:
• OPERATING MOTOR VEHICLE UNDER/INFLUENCE ALCOHOL/DRUGS/ETC. .08 – 1ST OFFENSE,
• OPERATING ON SUSPENDED OR REVOKED OPERATORS LICENSE,
• REAR LICENSE NOT ILLUMINATED,
• NO REGISTRATION PLATES,
• NO REGISTRATION RECEIPT,
• REGULATION & TITLE REQUIREMENTS VEHICLE NOT OPERATING ON HIGHWAY,
• FAILURE TO REGISTER TRANSFER OF MOTOR VEHICLE,
• FAILURE OF OWNER TO MAINTAIN REQUIRED INSURANCE/SECURITY, 2ND OFFENSE,
• TRAFFICKING IN CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, 1ST DEGREE, 1ST OFFENSE – (> OR = 2 GRAMS METHAMPHETAMINE).
Michael T. Grim, 52, of Tutor Key, Kentucky; was arrested on April 10, 2020, at 1:05 A.M., by deputy James Keaton, of the Johnson County Sheriff Department, and was charged with:
• ASSAULT, 4TH DEGREE (DOMESTIC VIOLENCE) NO VISIBLE INJURY,
• TAMPERING WITH PHYSICAL EVIDENCE,
• POSS CONT SUB, 3RD DEGREE – DRUG UNSPECIFIED,
• DRUG PARAPHERNALIA – BUY/POSSESS,
• BAIL JUMPING 1ST DEGREE,
• THEFT OF SERVICES.
Larry W. Williams, 52, of Paintsville, Kentucky; was arrested on April 11,2020, at 5:26 P.M., by officer Zach Stapleton, of the Paintsville Police Department, and was charged with:
• DISORDERLY CONDUCT, 2ND DEGREE,
• PUBLIC INTOXICATION-CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE (EXCLUDES ALCOHOL).
