BULLDOG LANE, Ky. — The Lawrence County Board of Education held the regular monthly meeting December 17, 2018 at 6pm in the LCHS Library.
The agenda had many items to discuss and special guests from Representative-Elect Kathy Hinkle to the newest members of the NBCT, National Board Certified Teachers, along with Managers from Food City for their community service.
At the call to order The Mission is: Every Child College Ready; A Community Involved and Informed.
Next on the agenda was the presentation of School Bucks to Lawrence County Schools by Cheryl Gowan, Food City Human Relations Coordinator and Kevin Garrett, Food City Manager. School Bucks was able to provide goodies for all Lawrence County Schools.
The Newest LC Teachers with National Board Certifications were acknowledged last night. They are Jenna Compton from LEES, Summer Brown from LEES, Craig Brown from LCHS Science Department, Kara Brown with LCHS Science Department, Mellisa Blackburn from LCHS with AG Teacher and Cindy Queen with Special Needs. (Not all were in attendance).
The agenda then called for State Representative-Elect Kathy Hinkle along with Dr. Fletcher to present a Citation of Appreciation for retiree Paulette Simpson. Mrs. Simpson first volunteered for many events, trips whatever was necessary before hiring on with the School Board where she has worked over 19 yrs. Dr. Fletcher made this comment, “She has always gone above and beyond her duties as an outstanding employee, never complaining instead jumping in to help any way she could and a very special thank you goes out to her.”
On the Communication agenda Dr. Fletcher spoke about the need to evaluate the Alternative programs. There will need to be a permanent decision made next meeting on the criteria needed to operate more with the children.
Looking at school security safety the number one thing they found were relationships with all students K-12, and have 1 person to 1 student representation.
The potential partnership with ACTC for vocational/technical training is looking great, Fletcher said, with courses such as welding, carpentry and more. There is talk of possibly busing students to ACTC for these courses.
As far as days missed due to bad weather, LC has only used two google classroom days and one day missed for snow.
Lt. Governor Jenean Hampton is going to try to visit in January to tour LMS and Blaine Schools. The focus is going to be Science, Technology and Math.
Trinity Preschool and Lawrence County Preschool have pooled their funds together and are going to see to it that the county gets the preschool children need for their fundamental skills. There are approximately 21 students that will be attending.
The board then started the discussion of school safety beginning with the bleachers in the gym. Dr. Fletcher said he has been replacing the broken areas of the bleachers but has finally run out, and the coaches are afraid it’s not enough (damage) to order new parts. On some of the bleachers such as motors, wheels, handrails are missing, and seats are sagging. There are places that the bleachers are not secure from the wall. Dr. Fletcher had a safety meeting with staff and was reassured for now the bleachers are fine to use with the new parts on them. The cost to fix the bleachers can only come out of the Construction Fund for LCHS only. The cost of the new camera system is also allowed to be paid through the Construction Fund. New Tech Systems got the camera bid, BTW.
There is also a Teacher vacancy at LEES and upon approval an (Emergency Certification for teacher) will be implemented.
The B.O.E. ended their meeting with acknowledge receipt of Superintendent’s Personnel Action/Update.
