ASHLAND, KY. -– The Kentucky State Police in Ashland are investigating a fatal, two vehicle collision that occurred yesterday evening, at approximately 5:37 PM, close to the junction of Reeves Lane on West US Highway 60 in the Globe community of Carter County.
The investigation revealed that Marsha Scott, age 61 of Morehead, had been operating a 2006 Pontiac Montana mini-van and was turning left on to US Highway 60 from Reeve’s Lane, when she failed to observe a motorcycle which was traveling Eastbound. The motorbike, a 2000 Suzuki Marauder, was being operated by Terry Johnson, age 43 also of Morehead, and carried his wife, Tonya Johnson, age 43, as a passenger. Evidence on scene indicated Mr. Johnson attempted to avoid the collision through braking, before laying the bike over on its left side, but was ultimately unable to dodge the mini-van. The motorcycle struck the mini-van close to its front left fender.
Tonya Michelle Johnson, the passenger on the motorcycle, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Carter County Coroner, William Waddell. Terry Johnson was transported to Saint Claire Medical Center for treatment, and was later air-lifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington. Both were wearing helmets. Neither occupant of the Pontiac was injured.
At the time no criminal charges have been filed as a result of the crash, and alcohol is not a suspected contributor. The collision remains under investigation by Trooper Bobby King, who was assisted on scene by Carter County EMS, the Carter County Coroner’s Office, and the Carter County Sheriff’s Office.
