Callaham to seek Coroner’s position
Martin County educator and legendary basketball star Robin Harmon (Newsome) formally announced her candidacy for Martin County Judge-Executive, January 30, 2018 at the Martin County Government Center in Inez.
Joining Ms. Newsome, a Democrat, in the crowded field running to replace five term judge/exec. Kelly Callaham who chose to run for County Coroner instead in 2018 is former county clerk Carol Sue Mills, a Republican who served as clerk for three terms and Gretta Ward, a Milo Democrat who is a former District 3 magistrate.
Harmon has served the youth of Martin County as an educator and a coach for the past 36 years. During her tenure with the Martin County Board of Education, she served as the head coach of the Sheldon Clark High School Lady Cardinals’ basketball team, accumulating over 500 wins giving her the honor of being the winningest coach ever at Sheldon Clark, four regional championships, a member of the KHSAA Hall of Fame, Morehead State Hall of Fame and had the privilege of coaching Martin County’s only Miss. Basketball, Ida Bowen.
Harmon was eventually appointed to the position of Athletic Director and County Wide Athletic Director, for Sheldon Clark High School, overseeing the entire athletic department including budgets.
Since her retirement in 2017, Harmon has remained committed to public service in Martin County, and will run her campaign based on Martin County values. She is a devout Christian, a loving wife to Gene “Duke” Newsome, and adoring mother to Katelyn and Laken “Boo” Newsome.
As Martin County’s next Judge-Executive, Harmon promises to be a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars, and to tackle the water problem that has plagued the county for the past several decades.
She said she is also committed to attracting private investment in the county by working hand in hand with business owners from across the state and the country.
“This is a crucial time in our County’s history,” says, Harmon. “Martin Countians deserve effective and efficient leadership that will fight for their interests here at home. I firmly believe that Martin County’s best days are still ahead, and I want to help the people of this great County realize their potential.”
