VFW ‘BOY SCOUT OF THE YEAR’
Congratulations to Eagle Scout Wesley Whelan for winning the Boy Scout of the Year award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post 6103.
Wesley Whelan is a recent graduate from Paul Blazer High School in Ashland. Wesley came in 1st place of the local nominees from the Lawrence County KY and Wayne County WV. This is the first year the local VFW held the competition.
Commander Don Wolfe has started several new scholarship awards programs and he is very pleased with the positive response to the programs.
Wesley was given $100 from the VFW and his nomination then went to compete at the District level. The day before presenting Wesley with his award, Commander Wolfe was notified that Wesley won the district level as well and will be competing at the state level for Scout of the Year as well.
Commander Wolfe continued to explain that he was thrilled as this is the second nominee from the local post to win the District. The previous was Isabella Handley who ended up placing 3rd in the state competition. Don Wolfe is hoping that Wesley does as well.
“We are two for two winning District on our first two tries.” I am hoping this winning streak continues,” Stated Commander Wolfe.
Major Gary Siembor, who was appointed the youth project officer by the VFW has worked hand in hand with Commander Wolfe on these projects commented; “Wesley had a very impressive resume and all of us judging at the post was very impressed with such a fine young man.” Siembor continued to say; “Don Wolfe did most of the leg work researching these projects and getting me the rules and guiding me. I did very little, we owe Don a lot of thanks for starting such wonderful programs. We have a lot of very deserving people in this county whom deserve recognition and this is a great way of doing it.”
VFW Post as a whole wish Wesley Whelan the best in the future and are very proud of him for representing Lawrence County in such a good light.
