Possible ‘nickel tax’ to be explained at January BOE meeting, Fletcher says
“…The Lawrence County Board of Education has invited Mr. Joe Nance to the regular January board meeting to discuss the process for financing the construction of a new school. Mr. Nance works with Ross, Sinclair, and Associates and is considered a leader in Kentucky school finance. Mr. Nance also has extensive knowledge and experience with the Kentucky Department of Education’s regulations related to school finance.
Currently, the Lawrence County School System can bond approximately $7.25 million towards building a new school. Depending on the size of the new school, this may only cover approximately half the funds needed. Mr. Nance will talk with the board about the means to make up the deficit, which includes the amount of funds that the state will match, the need for a recallable nickel tax, the impact on property taxes, and comparisons with other Kentucky counties.
For clarity, the LCBOE will NOT be voting on any specific item towards building a new school on Tuesday. This session is intended to inform the Board, and anyone who would like to attend, about the process for financing the construction of a new school.
The Lawrence County Board of Education’s regular meeting will be held at the Lawrence County High School library on January 17, 2017 at 6 PM.
