4-H Team Wins LEGO Tournament Award
The Spare Parts LEGO team from Lawrence County 4-H won the Team Spirit Award at the FIRST LEGO Regional Tournament held December 2 at Ashland Community and Technical College.
This is the fourth year that ACTC has hosted the tournament to provide skill building opportunities for area youth in science technology, engineering and math. This is the only FIRST LEGO tournament in the FIVCO area of Kentucky, and it is a qualifying event for the state FLL tournament.
Fifteen teams of elementary and middle school students competed on the topic Animal Allies. The challenge was to come up with innovation solutions for dealing with problems where people and animals interact or share the environment.
Selected on the basis of their scores in the robot performance, robot design, project and core values aspects of the competition, the LEGO teams going to the state tournament are the Fire Pandas and Teenage Mutant Ninja Sloths from Ashland Middle School, Lego Raiders from Greenup County 4-H and Poage Elementary School Pioneers #2 from Ashland.
The Team Spirit Award was presented to the Spare Parts team for their cooperative spirit in all aspects of the competition
“It is rewarding to see the enthusiasm these students have about their projects,” said Chrisha Spears, Workforce Solutions Specialist and event co-coordinator. “They are learning about STEM subjects through hand-on projects that involve creative and critical thinking, teamwork and communication skills.”
“Events such as this can inspire students to become science and technology leaders and can contribute to the success of the SOAR initiative to enhance innovation and educational opportunities in the region,” Spears said.
Next year’s 5th FIRST LEGO League Regional Qualifier Tournament is already being planned.
