Kid’s Fishing Day, Rotary Auction among topics at meeting
As the weather warms up, so do the list of events planned for fundraising and putting that money back into the community by the Louisa Rotary club’s members who met Thursday, May 26th.
Last week’s golf tournament was as successful as it was fun according to the feedback from Rotarians. The weather wasn’t great, but that didn’t stop this group of 7 golf teams from raising around $2,992. after paying all overhead expenses.
Several announcements were made regarding upcoming events and following up on new community projects. One was the Kid’s Fishing Day on June 4th at Yatesville Lake, another being the status of enrollment and when classes will begin at Lawrence Counties new Sullivan College. Catrina Vargo sent word that enrollment has been great and their first class is projected to begin in June.
“Summer quarter starts June 27,” Vargo said. “A Computer Applications class will be held on site for the summer quarter.” She said several students are enrolled in online classes. There has been a series of FREE college prep courses going each Tuesday through June 7 beginning at 6:00 pm. The next two are ‘Successful & Online Blended Learning,’ and Your Future Career.’ There is still time to register. Call 606-826-2971, or stop by. The Sullivan Louisa Center for Learning is open Tuesday and Thursday 11:00 am – 8:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.
The guest speaker at Rotary was Cathi Kise Blair, the Outreach & Volunteer Assistant with Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Center. Ms. Blair spoke about a new $10,000 grant to help with the Summer Feeding Program for Lawrence County. I have included an article from Ms. Blair about the updates on this program at the bottom. They are asking the community for volunteers in each part of Lawrence County to insure that as many kids are fed this summer as possible.
In wrapping up the meeting, the Annual Rotary Auction was mentioned. The local radio station will be live streaming the auction, and this year plans are being made to also be live on Facebook.
SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM IS BACK FOR LAWRENCE COUNTY
Many school systems in Eastern Kentucky have participated in the Summer Feeding Program which provides meals for children when they are out of school. The program is part of the USDA that works to bridge the gap when school is not in session. More than 1,000 sites in Kentucky provide almost 2 million breakfasts, lunches and snacks to Kentucky children annually through the Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP).
Lawrence County participated in the program many years ago but had not an active participant recently. In fact, Lawrence County was 1 out of 5 counties that was designated by the Kentucky Department of Education as a target county to increase participation in the SFSP. The Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Center which works with low-income families also realized the great need for this program. The FBAMC applied with the KDOE to become a SFSP sponsor, obtained a grant from Catholic Charities and the program was up and going!
With the assistance of the Lawrence County Food Service Director Cindy Hay and all of the Family Resource Center Directors in the county and the Public Library staff, FBAMC has been able to establish 14 feeding locations throughout the county. Various churches and fire departments throughout the county have signed on to be feeding sites. Most of the feeding locations will also have some type of programming or activities in conjunction with the meals. One such facility is Cherryville Missionary Baptist Church which feeds on Mondays and Wednesdays. The congregation decided that they would offer “open gym” time following the meal. Participants will be able to play basketball, badminton, corn hole, hula hoop and other types of games.
The program is for children 18 and younger. Meals MUST be eaten on site. Below is a list of the feeding locations, days and times and the start dates. If you have any questions please contact Cathi Blair at 606-638-0219 or Cindy Hay at 606-638-9671.
