MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. — Martin County Sheriff John Kirk said this morning that a 14-year-old boy was killed in a bicycle accident on Poplar Fork Road near the Beauty area.
Kirk said the boy and a family member were riding their bikes about 8:30 Tuesday night down a steep hill when the 14-year-old lost control.
He also said the boy did not have brakes on his bike and was likely going between 50 and 60 mph when he crashed into a metal drain pipe in the creek.
Police say the family member who was with the boy had brakes on their bike and was able to slow down, which caused them to lose sight of the boy, WYMT.com reported today.
When the family member couldn’t find the 14-year-old, they went home and told other family members, who also searched for the boy, but could not find him.
Sheriff Kirk said the family reported the boy, an 8th grader at Martin Co. Middle School, missing about 1:00 a.m. Wednesday. A deputy went to the last area the boy had been seen and found his body.
Officials say the road is narrow and there are ditches on either side with no shoulders.
