Lady Dawgs surprising teams on the court, go 2-1 in first three games

Taylor PorterTaylor PorterLouisa, KY - The Lady Bulldogs have started the season off strong as they picked up their second win on the road this past Saturday over Prestonsburg, 75-53. The Paintsvile Tigers came to town on Monday night as both teams were 2-0 coming into the game. LC took a 2pt lead going into the 4th quarter but couldn't hang on as the Tigers outscored the Dawgs by 10 pts to pull out a hard fought battle in District 57 play, 57-49.

Saturday's game with Prestonsburg saw the Dawgs take control in all four quarters and never slowing down their fast paced offense. Senior Lena Ison & junior Taylor Porter both contributed 23pts apiece for LC. The Dawgs had 8 players score as a team effort hitting shots from beyond the arc, in the paint, & going 17-24 from the foul line.

"Our girls played hard against Prestonsburg," said coach Harless. "Things go easier when everybody can contribute on the court as a team & communicate as well."

Paintsville came into Monday nights contest looking for an easy win, but the much improved Lady Bulldogs from last year were looking to make a statement against the Tigers.

With an early 57th District matchup, neither team backed down throughout the game. The Tigers went up by 1pt at the end of one quarter and increased that by 5pts by halftime. Coach Harless' team came out after halftime and held the Tigers to only 6pts and took a 2pt lead at the end of 3 quarters. Porter went 7-9 from the floor, 3-5 from beyond the arc, and 3-4 from the foul line en route to 26pts on the night.

After a loose ball late into the game, players from both teams did a little bit of pushing and shoving causing coaches from both benches to start arguing and pointing fingers. The referees took control of the situation and so did the Tigers as they outscored the Dawgs 23-13 in the final quarter to pull out the win.

"Things turned around for Paintsville when we left a player open in the corner and she connected from beyond the arc to give them the lead," Harless said. "We need to get Taylor Porter open more in the offense, that's hard to do when they have two and three players guarding her. Lena Ison is also hitting her shots, but we just have to work on things as our next opponent is Sheldon Clark and they're going to be gunning for us as well."

The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action Friday, Dec. 9th as they travel to Sheldon Clark to take on the Cardinals in District play. Game time 6/7:30 pm.

Bulldogs blow lead in 4th, fall to Elliott Co.

Louisa, KY - LC opened their season by hosting the Elliott Co. Lions last Friday. The Bulldogs were led by senior Hayden Kiser with 22pts, but it wasn't enough as the Lions were down by 8pts in the 3rd quarter but rallied back to pull out a 77-70 win to spoil the Bulldogs home opener.

"We did a lot of good things in the Elliott Co. game but suffered from inconsistency and excessive turnovers, Bulldogs coach David Miller said. "Our defense, rebounding, and intensity were very good at times and our ball-handling will improve with time as well as learning how to finish games."

Junior guard Blake Prince got into foul trouble early in the 1st quarter and coach Miller didn't hesitate to bring in 8th grader Austin Chaffins.

Chaffins got a lot of playing time as he and Prince rotated in and out. Chaffins came off the bench to score 13pts and went 5/5 from the foul line.

Seniors Hayden Kiser & Anthony Tucker had the hot hands for LC, as Tucker added 16pts with three 3-pointers. Kiser was dominate in the lane and under the basket as he pounded in 22pts and went 2/2 from the line.

The Bulldogs quarterback in football played basketball his first two years but sat out last season as the Dawgs went 0-28.

The Lions (2-1) players in Nickel & Fraley, each added 26pts. Nickel hit six 3-pointers while Fraley connected on three 3-pointers. Elliott Co. hit a total of eleven 3-pointers as they took nearly 40 shot attempts from behind the arc. Both teams converted well from the line as the Lions hit 11/14 and the Dawgs hit 15/17.

Elliott Co. connected on continuous shots to put the Lions back in front as the Bulldogs hurried their shots in the 4th to lose control as Kiser & Prince both fouled out. The Lions stayed in control down the stretch to capture the win.

LC will be back in action Tuesday, Dec. 6th as they travel to Shelby Valley to take on the Wildcats. Game time 6/7:30 pm

"Shelby Valley is the 3-time defending region champ - they are big, strong, long and experienced - this will be a stern test early in the season, coach Miller said.

Louisa, KY -  LC is beginning a new season with new players and looking to change the shape of last year's performance. Head coach David Miller is in his 2nd year with the Bulldogs after going 0-28 last year. Miller's first Bulldog team didn't have a lot of height but had the will to compete until the whistle blew. This year is different, the team has size, speed, & can shoot from outside the arc.

LC has seventeen players this season including eight middle schoolers, six seniors, one each for juniors, sophomores, & freshmen. Senior Hayden Kiser is expected to lead the Bulldogs after sitting out last year. He plyed as a freshman and sophomore and has frown to 6'3" with a nice jump shot. Logan Finley, Lance Clay and Anthony Tucker who have playing experience but did not suit up last year are being counted on to contribute as well as speedy sophomore A.J. Cyrus.

Three 8th graders, will see a lot of playing time on the Varsity as they have been in the majority of the offensive and defensive plays in practice. Austin Chaffins, Grant Kiser, & Brandon Richardson helped last year's LMS 7th grade squad to a 35-4 record. Matt Ratliff could possibly see some action, coach Miller said.

"We are inexperienced as there are some major players that haven't played in several years & some younger players that haven't played on the varsity level," said coach Miller. "I do think we will be more athletic and have a chance to develop into a competitive team."

LC has only three starters that return from last year & two middle schoolers that played at the JV level.

"With the amount of time that we've had with the players, I thought the scrimmage games have gone well," Miller said. "The team is giving a great effort right now and listening very well, so we are making progress."

The Bulldogs open the season at home tonight (Friday, Dec. 2) as Elliott Co. comes to town. JV game time is 6:00 p.m. with the varsity to top off at 7:30 pm.
