LC wins shootout over Blackcats in soccer semis
Robinson Creek, Ky. — Lawrence Co. ( 16-2-2 ) will play for a 15th Region championship after beating Prestonsburg ( 16-3 ) by 2-1 on shootout/penalty kicks ( Pk’s 3-2 ) last night at Shelby Valley high school in the semifinals of the Region.
Bulldog freshman Sarah Lycans scored on a penalty kick in the first half after a handball by LC. Prestonsburg tied the score on a penalty kick by Beth Burchett in the second half.
After that it was LC freshman goalie Ally Moore and the Lawrence Co. defense who came up huge time after time to stop balls going into the net. The teams played the rest of regulation and two 5 minute overtimes without scoring so that forced a shootout/penalty kicks to decide who will play for a Region title.
In the shootout/penalty phase, both teams sent out five players and each player kicked from 12 yards out. The Dawgs sent Victoria Clevenger first and the Soccerdawgs leading scorer on the season hit the net with ease. P-Burg’s Beth Burchett countered with a goal. Raegan Crum sent one into the net. Moore stopped Carly Burchett to maintain the lead. Lycans from LC missed the net. Makayla Ousley scored for P-burg to tie it. Kylie Maynard scored for the Dawgs. McKenzie Little was stopped by Moore and it came down to the last two shooters with LC leading 3-2. LC’s Scyler Bowens hit the post and Moore stopped the last hope for Pburg to send the Dawgs into a wild celebration.
Lawrence Co. will face Johnson Central ( 15-7 ) in the 15th Region championship on Wednesday night at 7:00. Game will be at Shelby Valley. The two teams did not meet this season.

Their heart, determination and courage showed tonight in every aspect of the game.” Prestonsburg is a great team and matched us every step of the game. Hats to off them for a great effort.”
“Outstanding job by our defense tonight. They were very tough and kept Prestonsburg in check for the whole game. Great job by Freshmen Ally Moore for solid saves she had and for making a key stop in the shootout. Again great team effort and like I said to the girls after the game, enjoy it but time to look towards Johnson Central.”
