Maynard escapes with his life during carjacking by inmate; manhunt ongoing for 'dangerous' criminal

INEZ -- Martin County Sheriff John Kirk said this morning that part time transport officer Larry Maynard escaped what could have been a fatal injury after an inmate attacked him and threw him from the vehicle yesterday during an escape.

Maynard was transporting an inmate from Inez to the Big Sandy Detention Center in Paintsville when he was attacked not far from the US 23 and 645 intersection.

Kirk said Mark Crouch, 32, of Turkey Creek attacked Maynard first by trying to turn off the car with the keys, and then by grabbing him by the face and twisting it causing injuries that added to Maynard's already tender face where he was operated on for cancer recently.

Crouch then managed to grab the inside door handle and push Maynard from the vehicle dragging him about 30 feet on the roadway causing several cuts and abrasions.

Crouch then took off with the vehicle while still in handcuffs, Sheriff Kirk said. "He is being sought by every law enforcement department from here to Columbus."

Maynard has been working as a transport officer for "a long time" according to Kirk. "He was actually friends with this Crouch guy," Kirk said. Kirk also said there have been no reports of Crouch's whereabouts today so far.

Martin County Jailer Boonie Mahon is on vacation but returned a call from The Lazer for information although he said he "doesn't know much" yet since he was not in the county when the incident took place.

The funny thing is this guy was in trouble for something simple they would have already got him. These cops aren't worried about something big, they too worried about small things to get off their butts and go get this punk. They can't be that stupid. We all know this dude's in Ohio. Go get this a-- hole and stop worrying about the small people that might have shoplifted a pack a gum!

The Andy Griffith Show. Old school meets the new generation. The modern society has created animals and drug dependent nonproductive citizens.

"He was actually friends with this Crouch guy,"

They were friends and Maynard trusted the coward. He should have followed protocol regardless.

I'll take "idiot deputies who allow prisoners to ride in the front seat" for $600 Alex.

He was not a deputy, he's nearly a part-time transport officer and by NO means is he an idiot !!! Get your facts straight!!!!

I know Larry bless his heart. He's a good guy, just trying to do his job. Yeah the guy should have been in the back seat but I guess for whatever reason Larry didn't put him back there. Good friend of his, I guess he thought he could talk to him during transport to Paintsville. I'm sure if Larry knew he'd do that Larry would never have let him ride up front. Hopefully they will catch this guy quick and judge give him a hard sentence. Hope you recover quick Larry buddy, praying for ya!

That is what is wrong with this county they trust thugs. Anywhere else he would have been in the back seat not ridiing shotgun. How friendly is he now? Now there is a pedophilic crackhead running loose because of complete negligence. Way to go Martin County!! Keep up the good work.

Why was he in the front seat to start with and why weren't his hands cuffed behind his back?
