For what is believed the first time in modern history a woman has registered to run for Sheriff in Lawrence County. And she is proud of that fact.

Brittany Parsons is no fluke. She is working on her Criminal Justice degree and has some ideas for "change" in how the office is operated.Brittany Parsons is no fluke. She is working on her Criminal Justice degree and has some ideas for "change" in how the office is operated.

Brittany Preston, 26, of Louisa signed up Monday to run on the Republican ticket in the May 22, 2018 Primary election. So far, she will face Louisa Police Chief Greg Fugitt and Sheriff's deputy Chuck Jackson for the GOP nomination.

Two Democrats have also filed to run including Sheriff's deputies Mark Wheeler and Mack Wilhite.

(SEE THE BALLOT SO FAR HERE)

We asked Brittany for a statement about her decision to seek the office:

Why am I running for sheriff?

“I am running in this election for change! I want to be a light to the community. I want to bring a woman’s perspective to a position not usually held by a woman and I want all little girls to follow their dreams, especially if they want to be Sheriff one day!”“I am running in this election for change! I want to be a light to the community. I want to bring a woman’s perspective to a position not usually held by a woman and I want all little girls to follow their dreams, especially if they want to be Sheriff one day!”

"...I’m running for a number of reasons. Yes I am a woman & the first to run for sheriff in our county. It makes me feel both happy & sad to say that I’m the very first. It’s 2017 and this is just now happening. I’m sure I can’t be the only woman in history to have this passion for law enforcement & our community. I want to inspire my daughter and all little girls to follow their dreams & be fearless! The reward will be well worth the effort."

"...I’m proud to break this tradition & put my best foot forward! Since I was a little girl I have wanted to be Sheriff! My father would take me to the Martin Co. Sheriff’s office a few times a week to see his good friend and Sheriff at the time, Darriell Young. I was 4 years old when I received my first sheriff’s ID and badge.

"...In 2011, I became the mom of two beautiful twins, Sadie & Aiden.  Aiden passed away from NEC when he was only 9 days old. Losing him changed me & made me realize just how short life is. I started living every day like it could be my last and a few years later I landed a position at BSRDC. The years I worked at the jail I realized that I had finally found my passion & the thing that I am extremely good at!

"...In a few months I will have a Criminal Justice & Law Enforcement associates degree (BSCTS). I am dedicated to law enforcement, community, and family! If I am elected as Sheriff I promise to always do my best & to be respectful, strong & driven! I won’t make promises I can’t keep & I will do my best to stop the rampant drug problem the county is faced with now.

“...I am running in this election for change!

I want to be a light to the community. I want to bring a woman’s perspective to a position not usually held by a woman and I want all little girls to follow their dreams, especially if they want to be Sheriff one day!”

I bet if you check the arrest numbers you will find that Wheeler has a higher number than the others too not just indictments. So how can you be a pencil pusher and still have more arrest then the others? Maybe it is called being willing to work. Maybe a news agency will request the numbers and then you will see if you're not willing to go check yourself.

Seriously? You obviously have NO idea how things work so let me enlighten you. If MW takes the cases to the grand jury, he is the one who works the case to get it to that point. An arrest is much easier considering they just have to put them in the cruiser and contact our jailer. He must have got you good, because I don't know how you can dispute facts and actual numbers! Wow

Go check the Circuit Clerk's public system yourself and you will see that they are accurate. Then you post you full name.

[quote name="Lee"]Since you would not allow my post on arrests made by deputies on the thread of those running for Sheriff let’s try it here.
As of today “Fact Finder” you are so wrong on those numbers!!! Mark Wheeler does not have no where near that many arrest. He may have his name on there as the “reporting” officer but he has not made that many arrests not even close to it. It’s so easy to make things up such as..through Mark wheelers career he has only made 5 felony arrest and the other deputies have made 500 arrests each. See what I mean. Your results are a joke. If you really found any type of record like you posted you would surely have posted your real name and gloated...not some fake name such as “Fact Finder” LOL LOL

Those are not arrest numbers. Those are Circuit Court indictments by each officer which is intended to give an idea of felony cases work through the grand jury and circuit court process. On another note since you know so much about who has how many arrest go ahead and post accurate/verified not made up numbers.

Thank you for proving my point that Mark Wheeler is a “pencil pusher”!! He only took the cases to the grand jury..he didn’t make the arrests!!

I made the directions SIMPLE! GO TO THE CLERKS OFFICE AND CHECK THE NUMBERS YOIRSELF LIKE I DID. THOSE WERE CASES WORKED BY EACH. I DONT WANT MY NAME ON HERE, SAME REASON YOU DONT. TRUTH IS TRUTH, LOOK FOR YOURSELF...IF YOU CANNOT REMEMBER HOW, I WILL REPEAT HOW THE PROCESS GOES!

I wouldn't vote for someone only because of their gender, that's just being stupid. Each one should be looked at for their qualifications for office. (I do wish she would tone down the exclamation points...there are too many of those in the article, makes it look like shouting).

As a former sheriff deputy, a couple tips for her... work on your image Bc ppl will rip you apart by it. Also watch what you post ANYWHERE, Bc now you’re in the spot light. I would recommend putting your fb account to private, Bc people now days are scared of clevage in photos of your personal life. People will find ANYTHING to bring against you.. trust me my mom ran for sheriff and they ripped her apart for stupid things. Don’t show your bad habits on social media.. like smoking drinking or posting drunk photos of yourself.(not saying you have or will post them) It leaves a bad taste in the people’s mouth that don’t support that kinda thing. We all know around in eastern Ky “EXPERIENCE” doesn’t matter when running for sheriff. So I don’t know why everyone is complianing bout her not having enough experience for sheriff... I’ve seen ppl that use to run coal trucks get sheriff but hey who am I, right? Although through and through I support your decision to run. Just thought I’d give insight on what it’s like to be in position like that.

This so called “lee character” is a male lol. See youhave no clue what you’re even talking about “big mama” oops I mean “Mama”. Why is everyone bashing that woman for wanting to be Sheriff? She is qualified to run and I hope she hangs in there. The kicker will be when she wins.

I say go for it. She has been studying criminal law so you will have someone that knows the law. Also she is optimistic. The way to do things is treat others the way you would like to be treated. I say give her a chance. She would be an asset to the community

Only a few of the negative comments are about gender. Most are in regard to you're experience and the way you have chosen to present yourself. As a candidate for sheriff, you should have chosen to present yourself in a more mature and professional manner. You're young and even if you don't succeed this time, you will definitely learn a great deal about the process.

She’ll make a much better Sheriff than Mark Wheeler and that’s a fact!!! Let him go spend day after day in a prison with a bunch of criminals...oh forget that...he’s a pencil pusher not the physical type. Quit looking at her as a female and look at her as another candidate running for the office of Sheriff.

When women have big tits it doesn’t mean they’re trying to flash them to everyone in the world. You can see her shirt in the photo is almost pulled up to her neck. A woman is just as good at doing this job as anyone else is. A dog could run for Lawrence co and do better than half the people who have signed up. Give her a break. I do agree experience is needed, but she has went to school for this stuff basically. Half of the others haven’t. I do agree she should clean up her social media, as it doesn’t give the best image most would want to see in a sheriff. We also need to keep in mind she is a human though. Keep your hateful comments to yourself. She is obviously way more educated than half of you commenting on this page. Who she is friends with on Facebook does not mean anything. I know her personally and can guarantee she has grew up in Lawrence county. You guys must not have done enough digging ;) I’ll leave you to keep creeping on this poor girl now. Have fun! Good luck Brittany.

Going to a Criminal Justice Class does NOT give you the Experience you need to run for Sheriff. neither does working at BSRDC.
She gonna wear clothes like that out on calls and tell some big guy or big woman your under arrest...... when you go out by yourself....... Cause most of the time that is how it is......... What are you gonna do then?

Bravo to you Brittany Preston for defending yourself. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to be Sheriff as it’s been proven time after time when one of these good ole boys gets elected. You can do anything that is required in the Sheriffs position. So kudos to you Brittany Preston for your accomplishments and the best of luck to you.

She’s not even a Correctional Officer anymore, and I’m almost positive she hasn’t been for well over a year. Using the woman card to get the vote is kinda a little counter productive. Honestly, I’d much rather have somebody with actual experience as Sheriff. Not somebody who’s Facebook profile makes them look like an attention seeking harlot. Least that girl could’ve done is use a professional photo instead of a selfie.

Go home little girl and when you grow up then when you become a deputy for awhile and try to defend yourself at the head of a holler at Martha or yellow creek or Martin county line by yourself while waiting on backup then we might consider you for the job not being a guard at the jail with back up only feet away.

What a lot of you don’t know about this dear woman is that she is brave, a down rite good person and genuine and if you know her you know that her chest has a scar from a heart surgery from when she was a child and this is not cleavage hanging out! I think what she is doing is what a lot others would be too scared to do! I think this county needs some lifting up and she can do it. Yes it’s a shock but it’s 2017 it’s time to be open minded ok she may not have the most experience but she’s got some confidence and highly driven!

Merry Christmas everyone! I realize that not everyone is going to agree with this decision I’ve made to run for “SHERIFF!” In the past I have jumped to conclusions about candidates too. You see these pictures of me & your minds create an image. Let me have an opportunity to show you who I am & what I’m about. Anyone who knows me, will know that I am all about RESPECT! I believe in being honest, fair, dedicated, and strong! I have always worked extremely well in stressful situations, I’m a quick thinker & problem solver. I can handle my own & have good experience. I’ve helped the KSP with arrests in the past & have dealt with some serious situations at BSRDC. I will have my degree in criminal justice & law enforcement by the time elections roll around. I have been an excellent student because I have passion & drive for this blue line! If I was to be elected I will prove my worth. Just because I’m a woman & don’t have 30 years of experience that doesn’t mean I’m not qualified. If I was a man with no experience I’m sure even then people wouldn’t mind as much. Despite some of the things being said, I respect your options and feel that expression of opinion and beliefs is important! Thank you to everyone who has stood with me & will be there in the end of this. Thank you to the people who have said nice things & are dedicated to other candidates. I respect that you have their backs! I’m running against some pretty great people & I would never have anything bad to say about any of them. As long as the person running has their heart in this.. they will do a great job. I know that I would do amazing! I’m going to start campaigning after Christmas & I hope to see each of you face to face so you can ask me any questions you may have. Let’s discuss your concerns, but please be respectful. I don’t want to cause a ruckus and make our community look bad! We have a wonderful county full of amazing individuals! Let’s show that! Merry Christmas to everyone! #VoteBrittany

In all honesty,, Louisa is such a small town that she would probably do just fine, it’s not like our law enforcement here solve murders, or respond to real situations. A few drug busts, traffic stops, busting a few druggies every now and then, along with a few shoplifters, and that sums it up for Lawrence county, anyone could do that kind of police work, and all th current officers have years of experience in Mayberry policing, but combine their experience with somewhere like Chicago and experience doesn’t compare, we all know that our current court, judicial system here is all buddy, buddy played. Our county is not for the honest person to come in and make a Difference,,. Nope our county wants to be left alone with the same people in our leadership positions, you know kinda like why Louisa city mayor now has a salary of $50 thousand???? That way ol Harold won’t run for judge exec, it’s all corrupt all the way down the line. Me personally I’d like to see her get the job and really freak out some of these people and our career Lawrence county politicians,
