Press Release From Sheriff Garrett Roberts

December 8, 2017

A drug investigation that began in May 2016 has led to a case involving multiple co-defendants being presented to the Lawrence County Grand Jury.

On Wednesday December 6, 2017 Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler with the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office presented a case involving 19 co-defendants who were involved in trafficking controlled substances in Lawrence County, KY.

During the year and a half long investigation it was learned that some of the subjects had been working together since at least 2015 to bring crystal methamphetamine and other controlled substance into the county for distribution.

This investigation consisted of numerous hours of interviews as well as processing a large amount of recorded information relating to the operation.

The investigation found that several of the individuals would gather money from other involved individuals as well as others outside the group and travel to Louisville, KY, Huntington, WV and numerous other locations to purchase the methamphetamine and other substances to bring back to Lawrence County.

Once they arrived back with the drugs they would distribute them. Some of the individuals would arrange the sale of drugs while others would deliver the product, provide the transportation, or a location to hang out and come for the transactions.

A few of the other substances that were found to have been distributed were Heroin, Molly, Suboxone and Oxycodone.

Those subjects involved and charged with Engaging in Organized Crime – Criminal Syndicate are:

Paul “Shane” Hackney, Nicholas Hackney, Matthew Caudill, Alexis Boyd, Randy “Tap” Justice, Prince Stevens, Jasmine Mullins, Keith Penix, Amanda Thomas, Broderick “Nathan” Cyrus, Johnny Gibson, Zachary Gibson, Robert “Dusty” Powers, Shawn Fitzpatrick, Joey Thomas, Jeramie Vanover, Joann Collins, Brian Roop and Katlin Roop.

See photos click HERE

The investigation is continuing with more charges and arrests possible.

If anyone has information related to illegal drug activity they can report it to the Sheriff's Office at 606-638-4368. As always you can remain anonymous.

An indictment is not proof of guilt or innocence, but a charge that there is enough evidence to take the matter to trial.

Hey better check again...Trying to divert the negative attention away from your good buddy will not work. I GUARNTEE you that for every single thing you can say bad about the others running for Sheriff there can be two said about your good buddy you are trying so desperately to shed a bright light on so go for it. The Chief Deputy takes the cases to the grand jury that the other officers have been working. I sure wouldn’t call that field work lol. It was even posted on this site that he presented the case to the grand jury for an indictment...sure didn’t say he was the only investigative officer involved with this case. He should have been in the county doing field work instead of off trying to collect as many little plaques and pieces of paper he could before announcing he was wanting Sheriff. If you notice he’s the only one boasting about little pieces of paper. The other deputies were here in the county protecting the communities instead of trying to impress voters. So you need to go back and “check again”.

Well I was there when Mr. Wheeler presented this case and I can assure you that he was the one who worked the above case. We had access to the information and he is the one who did the case work and was not just presenting it for the others. It was very good to hear that someone is taking the time to help clean up the drugs in tour county. Never in all the times I was there when they were presenting case did I ever hear Mr. Wheeler present a case for any of the other deputies. Just wanted to clear that little miss conception up. Keep up the good work.

You sure are showing how clueless you really are about the process. The Chief Deputy does not present cases for the other deputies cases. He presents his OWN cases. As for field work the Chief Deputy in question has worked way more cases than the others. This is not because he is looking for the glory but because he is willing to work and trying to clean the county up. Go to the clerk's office and check the records and see who is doing the field work and cases. He has been talking about running for Sheriff since about 2008 unlike the 2 Johnny come lately ones. Find your comments about his little pieces of papers hilarious. The reason he has them to show is probably because the others don't have very many of them and have not tried to do anything to get those. Best I can tell from his post is that he received the dui award in 05, 06, 07, 08, 10 and 2017 and the seat belt award in 14, 15, 16 and 2017. As you can see several are way before running for Sheriff. Don't think you get those without being in the field.
Where are the other deputies achievements, that's right you have to work to get them. Maybe the Lazer will do a little research so that everyone and YOU will know the truth and that he is the one who worked the case and did not present it for the others.

Better check again because only involvement the other deputies have with the case is serving the indictments after they were issued. Go check the court case files and you will find out the truth, that did not work the case. On another note you have to do something to get those plaques and those certificates. You just can't set on your butt and draw a check if you want to make a difference. Neither of the other two running have ever worked any big drug cases. Check back several years and see who has been working the felony drug cases and trying to make a difference. It is ALL public record. Funny how now that they are running that they want to get involved and look like they are interested. Look who has been getting involved for several years.

Sorry Lee but the one deputy you dislike so much is the one who worked this case and not the whole Sheriff's Office. Don't see the one you like doing anything about the drug problem.

Who said anything about which one I like? I said any of them will be better than Mark Wheeler. Those other guys are great. It’s going to be simple for me as to knowing which one I won’t vote for and that’s Mark Wheeler!!! The hard part will be which of the others I want to vote for. Put that in your pipe and smoke it “Facts”.

Our current sheriff is not related to Wheeler...lol.. .his step dad is a Wheeler from Blaine, so sorry Leslie there is no relation there at all different set of Wheeler's, sorry to burst your bubble, Mark Wheeler applied with Bobby Workman a couple years before Roberts ever took office, after he got out of the Army, talk about getting your facts straight, go back and look at Jackson and Wilhite's facts they are the ones who are wrong with training and work experience. O'l Greg will put the beat down on Jackson's vote count local history and a worker, Wilhite is down talking every one in the race talk about a back stabber, working the teeny boppers in the plaza and high school, might even be the next one to go down in the old I knew him from way back scandals. don't you just love local politics.

Lol oh no Mark Wheeler was not a one man show on this bust...even though that’s what he wants people to think. Go back and look through the years at what he has or hasn’t done. He’s been a pencil pusher. How do you think he got his job? His uncle our current sheriff GAVE him the deputy job!!! Who do you think gave him the title of Chief Deputy?? Drum roll...his uncle, our current sheriff did. Where was he years before getting his little certificates and plaques? He didn’t have them is where. He waited until he knew his uncle was retiring and knew he was going to try to get the sheriffs office before he goes to get those little things. He should have been catching criminals instead of off collecting those cute little things!!!

That's exactly right Broken Rec. People need to be cautious and for sure arm yourself. The justice system is broken in Lawrence County. The people going to court laugh at the judge. HA !!! the jokes on us.

This diversion sentencing has been abused by the judges....not the defendants! A very small percentage of the defendants are being adequately sentenced with a lot of them even talking about what the court/judge will do on sentencing day, and you know what? They are spot on and know exactly how they will be sentenced! I've never seen anything like it in my life. I'm just waiting on Rod Serling to walk out of the courthouse on sentencing day and proclaim that we've entered the TWILIGHT ZONE because that's exactly what it's like these days!

The Lazer is a wonderful forum to voice your opinion on what a crappy job the Lawrence County judge is doing. The people of Lawrence County deserves better. This judge needs to GO! Your right the law enforcement agencies are doing their job. The judge lets them off just as fast as the authorities lock them up.

Lee you might was check the case because from what I hear it was one deputy who worked the case. Don't get me wrong the Sheriff's Office does a great job but in this case one deputy put a lot of work and time in this case. Have to put in work to get results and at least some deputies are being proactive.

Awesome job, I hope they all get busted, I know they’ll cooperate and tell on each other over and over again. I hope each and every one of them get what’s coming. I figure they’ll all plead out, and obviously cooperate, problem is there is no justice, no punishment and the same folks will be at it again. I’ve seen these same people off and on for years and none of them do any significant time in jail or rehab.

Rehabilitation and sobriety is the only thing that will stop the crimes being committed.

I understand the hard work involved in this case. The problem is nothing will be done once these dopers and thieves go before the judge. Don't the police that's involved feel like they are let down by the judge? Ohio sends them to prison every time they hold court.
