WHAT ABOUT POT?

The Lawrence County Fiscal Court had a bit of a historic moment not that long ago when it voted 'no' to having a needle exchange program in the county for drug addicts. This stirred up quite the controversy among citizens, with the vast majority opposed to the initiative.

Either way, there were very strong opinions on both sides of the aisle. That brings me to another issue, closely related.

During this year's legislative session, a number of representatives across the state came together to introduce HB 166, which would have effectively legalized medical marijuana in Kentucky. Though the bill was killed in committee, those lawmakers who sponsored the bill have vowed to try again during the 2019 legislative session. By that time, Lawrence County will have begun another term for the Judge/Executive.

Before going further, I think it is necessary to say that the Judge doesn't typically have a vote on the fiscal court. He would vote if there were a tie, however, making the next Judge's feelings on the matter of paramount importance.

So, why is that exactly?

Well, there was wording in HB 166 that suggested, if passed, local governments would be given a voice in whether or not their jurisdictions would allow the medical marijuana facilities, dubbed 'compassion centers'. Moreover, what about those who would grow and supply the drug to these compassion centers? I can't imagine this would be an easy decision to come to.

While there are undoubtedly many in Lawrence County opposed to providing the drug right here at home, there are various issues to consider.

To begin with, county residents would still be within their right to get the drug in other counties and bring it back to Lawrence. So, what about the money? We all know how poor the county is right now.

The potential revenue flow from private individuals could potentially be huge. And, just like Lawrence residents going elsewhere, a compassion center here could be used by non-residents of Lawrence County, bringing in an even larger flow of revenue.

What about the growers?

If they sold to compassion centers all over the state, what could that do for us here in the county? We need jobs and we need money. So, how would the next Judge/Executive handle this situation if, during the next legislative session, a similar bill (with similar rights given to local governments) were to be signed into law?

I'd love to hear what the candidates have to say on the matter when the Primary is decided and there are only two to choose from.

It should be legal everywhere. Alcohol should be the illegal one out of the two.

So now its a racial thing. Ok. bring the ones who led Detroit, Baltimore and New Orleans. See how that will work for us. Get real.

What??? Colorado went recreational and everything is fine and they’re not broke like Kentucky is. How is marijuana more dangerous than the legal stuff? If a military person would rather use marijuana instead of nerve pills for their PTSD is that ok? Or should they get a script and take pills for the rest of their lives? Think. I don’t truly understand what you’re trying to say about who led Detroit or whatever. Marijuana kills zero people per year, alcohol kills thousands per year, tobacco kills thousands per year, pills kill and addict daily, over eating kills thousands per day, so again. How is marijuana so dangerous? Name ONE person who has died from using marijuana.

To "Compassion"...Your name really fits you. I'm sure you would be the first to take a pill or smoke a joint. The Tylenol wasn't to treat the cancer, you idiot. It was for pain. I didn't deny them anything. They were intelligent and strong enough to stay away from drugs. People like you are why this country is in such terrible shape.

Tylenol for cancer pain? Really? Most cancer patients need more than Tylenol for pain. By the way Tylenol is a pill. Intelligent and strong enough to stay away from drugs? BS! Cancer patients go through chemo treatments, etc. marijuana is proven to help mitigate the pain and nausea caused from the chemo. If marijuana helped your family member would you deny them what GOD made or would you trust man made pills? By the way before you comment on marijuana do some friggin research, the states that have legal marijuana have a huge reduction in opioid prescriptions, that’s a FACT. So let’s debate marijuana, because I’ll throw more modern scientific research on the issue that proves I’m right. Simple. Try me. Who made marijuana? Compassion is what Jesus had for people, but I guess you think Jesus would rather you take chemo, radiation, pills, instead of marijuana. Do some research, I can tell you’re most likely over 50 and probably think marijuana is the devils lettuce. Lol, California went medically legal in 1996, ZERO deaths from its use. ZERO...Need I say more? Over eating is more dangerous than marijuana. Research please.

Obviously, this town is full of drunken, pot-smoking idiots whose only goal in life is money and a buzz. I have loved ones who have had cancer, they made it through with the help of God and the occasional Tylenol. Crystal, people also make money as prostitutes. Should we legalize that too?

God created marijuana, get it? Tylenol for cancer? Yeah right. You’re a LIAR.. If your loved one had cancer and since SCIENCE has proven that marijuana helps in numerous ways, would you deny them something that GOD made??? Marijuana has been used for thousands of years and absolutely ZERO deaths from its use. Your ignorance on the subject is astounding. Would God rather you take pills or use what he created naturally??? Get real, you’re a weak debater on this subject.

Is everyone in Lawrence County obsessed with money? We need alcohol to make money. We need pot to make money. Louisa used to be a nice little town in which to raise a family. It's so sad the state this town is in now.

The town NOT in the shape it’s in because of marijuana or alcohol. It’s poor because the same old white rich folks still trying to make the rules. Blaming society’s problems on marijuana is a joke, marijuana has been used for thousands of years, and no one OD’d ever...

Compassion and common sense is all that is needed on the marijuana legalization issue. Statistics show marijuana is far safer and less addictive than all the pills in the world. It’s far safer and less intoxicating than alcohol. Simply put, marijuana use cannot kill you, it won’t make you drunk and unfuctionable. The use of alcohol costs taxpayers billions in property damage, wrecks, drunken fights, liver and brain damage, pills kill and addict people daily. Marijuana provides relief from several diseases, science proves it. What if your loved one would rather use marijuana for pain or nerve issues instead of pills? What if your loved one had cancer and marijuana could help significantly in fighting back? Compassion and common sense. The states that have marijuana legalization have a huge reduction in opioid prescriptions. Been medically legal since 1996 and absolutely zero deaths from its use. Can we say the same about alcohol, pills, or tobacco. Lastly, God created marijuana it’s been here since there was dirt to grow it in.

I say just make it legal. I mean has anyone seen the turnaround in Colorado? Funds are way up, tourist rate is up and crime is down. People are going to do it regardless so why not make the county better with the money from it
