Jailer Ron Herrington said the two men were listed in stable condition at Deaconess Hospital as of 3 p.m. Wednesday.

“They entered the bathroom of their cell and they used an instrument to cut their neck as well as their wrist and forearms,” he said.

The inmates were apparently in the bathroom longer than their allotted time for personal hygiene and another inmate walked in on them.

Officers were inside the cell within seconds, Herrington said, to provide first aid and call for additional medical assistance.

The men were transported to Methodist Hospital and then to Deaconess for further evaluation and treatment.

Herrington declined to name the men, who will return to the jail within the week. The inmates will be given a psychological evaluation and will be placed on suicide watch.
