Lawrence Sheriff's Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler, right, earned a statewide safety award but Sheriff Garrett Roberts says "duty first"Lawrence Sheriff's Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler, right, earned a statewide safety award but Sheriff Garrett Roberts says "duty first"

This is a letter we received from Sheriff Garrett Roberts who is retiring this year after four successful terms as Lawrence Co. Sheriff:

Mark,

The Ky Transportation Cabinet and Ky Office of Highway Safety, will recognize Officers across the State for their extraordinary efforts to increase, seat belt, child restraint and booster seat usage on Kentucky roadways.

The Governor's Occupant Protection Enforcement Awards will be held on August 8th in Lexington Ky, with Lawrence Co. Schools starting classes the same day, the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office will not be sending their winner of this years award to the ceremony.

We will have him (Mark Wheeler) assisting with the opening day of school so we can ensure our children have a safe first day of school.

The following is a list of Deputies and the number of citations they issued from June 1, 2017 until May 31, 2018.

Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler 105
Sgt. Chuck Jackson 10
Deputy Mack Wilhite 13
Deputy Mason Keefer 40
Deputy Dwayne Bowen 4

Total Office Citations 172

As Sheriff I am Proud of the effort each Deputy has made to ensure the protection of the citizens and children of Lawrence County on our Roadways.

-Garrett

Now Let all the Yelling begin Garrett Is trying to do something Great and Listen to what the community has to say about it. Do Not let Politics get in the way they ALL are Good Deputy's but You see who does the Work and Who Don't. The others would do good if You can keep them from hanging around a Local store but that is My Opinion it really does not matter much

Should be safe at Speedway. Always a cop there. Is it good coffee or cute girls? No excuse for lazy cops.

LOL who is assigning officers their daily jobs? If you’re not assigned to traffic job and you’re assigned to delivering summons you can’t do traffic stops lol. It’s an election year folks and the chief deputy gives the other deputies their assignments. It just so happens the chief deputy is running for sheriff so put 2 and 2 together. He’s giving himself the assignments that he thinks will get him more votes...DUH!!!

Sorry but you are completely wrong David, these citations are work through a grant from State and Federal Highway Safety, the deputies are given Paid Overtime hours for nothing other than writing the Seat belt Child Seat and Booster Seat citations, so your concept of one person assigning everyone else other duties is wrong. Check the time sheets deputies, usually work 2 to 4 hour overtime shifts beyond their regular 40 hour shift. and if you check the Sgt. is in charge of seeing that deputies are serving their summons and civil papers which is a service that the office is paid to do by attorneys.

Evidently You have Not been around the Sheriffs Department Very Much and You are a Chuck Fan because if You do Deliver Summons You still do Patrolling and YES You Will make Traffic Stops All the Same I Think Either one will make a Good Sheriff but Chuck Has NO Excuse for Not doing His job other than Not making anyone Mad before the Election

Speedway is definitely a favorite hangout for some of those with the lowest numbers.

Great job Mark! As for the complainers the numbers don't lie. Why aren't the other cops doing their job? I think one of the slackers should help at school so you can get the award you have earned.
